ORNL Microscope Pushes Back Barrier of How Small
As reported in the Sept. 17, 2004, issue of the journal Science, researchers obtained the improved resolution with ORNL's 300-kilovolt Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), aided by an emerging technology called aberration correction.
The latest ORNL images improve on the previous resolution of 0.7 angstrom, also achieved with ORNL's Z-contrast STEM.
The work is funded by the Basic Energy Sciences program of DOE's Office of Science.

 COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICAL SCIENCES LABORATORY
A significant part of our research programme is concerned with modelling   nano-structures   as intermediate systems lying between small molecules and microscopic systems.
Modelling and simulations are a kind of computational experimentation for testing model systems for a variety of initial and environmental parameters.
Enhanced computational facilities, in the form of supercomputers, graphic workstations and powerful personal computers, have allowed   the   physical, chemical and biological sciences to enter a tremendously exciting phase of their development and growth.

 NANO
Using track membranes, new products are manufactured such as plasma filters, systems of membrane and biosensor monitoring of drinking and natural water, system of pure rooms and respirators, tip structures for Raman spectroscopy, systems of highly efficient heat removal from the reactor surface, membranes for purification of crystallization solutions, etc.
The XRSW method was modified for characterization of structures of multicomponent crystals, semiconductor heterostructures, multilayer X-ray mirrors, X-ray waveguide structures, organic multilayer systems based on Langmuir Blodgett films, and protein lipid systems.
The history of crystallography on the whole and the Institute of Crystallography, in particular, is a bright example of the interdisciplinary nature of science, which is especially clearly seen in the new 21st century, which requires the solution of the problem of atomic design of various substances with the preset properties.
