Fuel cell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fuel cells cannot store energy like a battery, but in some applications, like stand-alone power plants based on discontinuous sources (solar, wind power), they are combined with electrolyzers and storage systems to form an energy storage system.
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device similar to a battery, but differing from the latter in that it is designed for continuous replenishment of the reactants consumed; i.e.
Fuel cells run on hydrogen, a fuel which can be made by any individual or nation which has a supply of water and electricity.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells and H2 Fuel Cells
Fuel cells are a type of technology that use hydrogen to produce useful energy.
Fuel cells can be used to power vehicles or to provide electricity and heat to buildings.
Hydrogen's potential use in fuel and energy applications includes powering vehicles, running turbines or fuel cells to produce electricity, and generating heat and electricity for buildings.

 Hydrogen Fuel Cells
At the anode, electrons are conducted from the hydrogen molecules and are used in the external circuit (2).
Fuel cells in portable applications would have a longer life than batteries and would not need to be recharged, they would only need to be refueled, and since they have a higher power density, they would be smaller (“Fuel Cell Basics: Benefits” 3).
The basic components of fuel cell systems are the fuel processor, the energy conversion device (fuel cell or fuel cell stack), the current converter, and the heat recovery system for stationary applications (4-5).

 hydrogen fuel cells
The fuel cell is similar to a battery.
Since the fuel cell relies on chemistry and not combustion, emissions from this type of a system would still be much smaller than emissions from the cleanest fuel combustion processes.
The message is clear: a modern fuel cell electric vehicle would have 2300 times less hydrogen energy content than the Hindenburg, or 100 times less per passenger, and the hydrogen container would be immeasurably stronger.

Energy Solutions: Fuel Cells - Global Warming - Sierra Club
Fuel cells are poised for a breakthrough into the mainstream, and offer a clean alternative for not only electricity generation, but also powering our automobiles and other vehicles.
For years NASA has used fuel cell technology to generate electricity and power spacecraft.
The fuel is fed into an electrolyte near the electrodes and an electric current is created.

COAST TO COAST AM WITH GEORGE NOORY: SHOWS
Fuel cells are essentially inexhaustible batteries -- as long as they're supplied with fuel, they don't lose charge.
Hydrogen (or hydrogen-rich fuel) is passed over the anode where a catalyst splits it into ions and electrons.
Within a fuel cell a simple electrochemical process takes place that converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, with heat and water as the only emissions.

 Fuel Cells and Hydrogen
Fuel cells can then produce on-demand electrical energy to power your home, your laptop or your cell phone, and even power your car.
Fuel cells—devices that produce electricity via chemical reactions rather than combustion—convert fuel into electricity two or three times more efficiently than power plants or internal combustion engines do, and produce far fewer toxic emissions or noise.
The coming "hydrogen economy" will pair electricity with hydrogen to produce an energy system that is safer, cleaner, and even more versatile than the one we know today.

 Hydrogen explosion
While the complications of building mobile units means that fuel cell cars are still some years off, Lovins thinks that the devices' use for stationary "distributed" power, supplying current to homes, apartment buildings and hospitals, is imminent.
The fuel cell could soon have a major impact, not only in how we power our homes, but our automobiles and appliances as well.
Inside the house, a sign greets visitors: "Welcome to Plug Power's Residential Fuel Cell System Demonstration Home." Counters have neat displays of appliances, including a microwave, toaster, hair dryer, electric stove, clock radio, TV with VCR, and a computer, all in an effort to show that the Plug Power 7000 can handle the draw.

The Hydrogen Technologies and Systems Group of the Center for Electric and Hydrogen Technologies and Systems coordinates and integrates NREL's hydrogen and fuel cell research activities, and works with DOE and other government agencies, industry, communities, universities, and other national labs to implement the National Hydrogen Energy Vision for America's clean and secure energy future.
These research areas directly support the NREL Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies Program.
Hydrogen can be produced from a wide variety of domestic resources using a number of different technologies.

 Hydrogen fuel cell technology
Electrons stripped from the hydrogen produce direct current electricity which can be used in a DC electric motor or converted to alternating current.
Several processes are being explored to derive hydrogen from water, most notably electrolysis of water and thermal decomposition of water.
If fossil fuels are used to generate the hydrogen, either through the Methane-Steam method or through Electrolysis of Water, there will be no advantage over using the fossil fuels directly.

 HYDROGEN FUEL CELLS
Electrical power provided by fuel cells is DC and would need a device called an inverter to convert it to AC.
The test platform is capable of evaluating all components of fuel cell systems including the stacks, parasitic powers, and traction drive motors.
One fuel cell system had an efficiency of 41% and produced 50kW of power.

Fuel Cells are on the verge of being introduced commercially, revolutionizing the way we presently produce electricity.
Which kind of Fuel Cell application, stationary, automotive or mobile, is most likely to achieve the first breakthrough in commercialisation was also under serious discussion.

Fuel Cell Works Supplemental News Page
This process is the basis for the hydrogen-catalysing action of hydrogenase and is of great biotechnical interest: unlike today's commercial fuel cells, it does not require platinum — an expensive metal of limited availability — as the electrode.
Pickett and colleagues3 show that the physical properties of the synthetic analogue are a good match for those of the enzyme, and that the Fe—Fe organometallic unit drains electron density from the 4Fe4S cluster.
The synthesis method described by Pickett and colleagues resolves the 'black box' spectral signals of the active centre of hydrogenase, and points towards a next generation of bio-inspired catalysts.

Wired News: Bush Promotes Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Beforehand, the president spent about 20 minutes watching demonstrations of cars, a scooter and portable electronics such as cell phones and laptops, all powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
A White House fact sheet acknowledged hydrogen is still four times as expensive as gasoline and fuel cells are 10 times more expensive to build than a conventional automobile engine.
The new program -- called "Freedom Fuel" by the White House -- would focus on spurring research to develop the technologies and infrastructure needed to produce, store and distribute hydrogen for use in future fuel-cell vehicles or stationary electricity-generating facilities.
