Food Standard ( Standard 1.5.2) - foods produced using gene technology - regulates the sale of genetically modified foods in Australia and New Zealand and was incorporated into the Food Standards Code on 13 May 1999 and in an amended form on 7 December 2000.
For general information on gene technology, contact the Gene Technology Information Service on freecall 1800 631 276 or visit the Biotechnology Australia website at www.biotechnology.gov.au.

All this data shows is that testing GM foods works.
However, as is the case with pretty much all research these days, commercial agreements to develop a technology are usually signed very early on in the development of a project.

Why Eat Wild Food-  Eating Weeds for nutrition and savings!
We associate these with undercooked meat, not realizing that E. coli in particular could easily be spread via any food (like salad) that was handled and not subsequently well-cooked or, at least, washed in very hot water.
Many types of produce could easily bring dozens of socially-transmissible diseases directly onto our plates, simply because much produce is used raw, and is too delicate for washing in water hot enough to kill any bacteria or viruses present.
Tuberculosis, as already mentioned, is easily passed through close social contact, including through the handling of any type of food.

50 Harmful Effects of Genetically Modified Foods
A similar result was found in 1997 with the GM bacteria Rhizobium melitoli.
No Regulated Health Safety Testing The FDA only requests of firms that they conduct their own tests of new GM products in what Vice President Quale back in 1992 referred to as a "regulatory relief program." The FDA makes no review of those tests unless voluntarily requested by the company producing the product.

Genetically Modified Foods and Organisms --HGP Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues
The next decade will see exponential progress in GM product development as researchers gain increasing and unprecedented access to genomic resources that are applicable to organisms beyond the scope of individual projects.
Includes documents and searchable databases and covers worldwide development, testing, and regulatory review of GM organisms.
Combining genes from different organisms is known as recombinant DNA technology, and the resulting organism is said to be "genetically modified," "genetically engineered," or "transgenic." GM products (current or in the pipeline) include medicines and vaccines, foods and food ingredients, feeds, and fibers.

But Dr Julian Little, of the Agricultural Biotechnology Council that represents GM firms, said GM maize was "at least as safe" as non-GM crops.

The labelling of GM maize varieties and GM soy varieties which did not fall under Regulation 258/97 are covered by Regulation (EC) 1139/98 concerning the compulsory indication of the labelling of certain foodstuffs produced from genetically modified organisms as amended by Regulation (EC) 49/2000.
In addition, all GM additives and GM flavourings have to be labelled according to Regulation (EC) 50/2000 on the labelling of foodstuffs and food ingredients containing additives and flavourings.
Regulation (EC) 1830/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2003 concerning the traceability and labelling of genetically modified organisms and the traceability of food and feed products produced from genetically modified organisms and amending Directive 2001/18/EC were published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods
It is interesting to note that the new eleventh edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary added the word "Frankenfood" as another term to describe genetically engineered food.
But that process is far different than the recombinant DNA splicing used in modern agricultural biotechnology.
In Europe, genetically engineered foods are more commonly referred to as genetically modified foods, genetically altered foods or GMOs (short for genetically modified organisms).

Supported by the overwhelming weight of scientific opinion in the developed and developing world, it accepts that GM food is as safe to eat as conventionally produced food.

EUROPA - Food Safety - Biotechnology - GM Food & Feed - Introduction
The food and feed which contain or consist of such GMOs, or are produced from GMOs, are called genetically modified (GM) food or feed.
These and other GM food and feed which were lawfully placed on the market in the Community prior to 18 April 2004 may continue to be placed on the market, used and processed provided that they are notified to the Commission before 18 October 2004.
Organisms, such as plants and animals, whose genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such way are called genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Say no to genetic engineering Greenpeace International
Genetic engineering enables scientists to create plants, animals and micro-organisms by manipulating genes in a way that does not occur naturally.
When we force life forms and our world's food supply to conform to human economic models rather than their natural ones, we do so at our own peril.
Their release is 'genetic pollution' and is a major threat because GMOs cannot be recalled once released into the environment.

 SCOPE: GM Food
Genetically modified foods (GM foods or GMF) offer a way to quickly improve crop characteristics such as yield, pest resistance, or herbicide tolerance, often to a degree not possible with traditional methods.
Further, GM crops can be manipulated to produce completely artificial substances, from the precursors to plastics to consumable vaccines.
The appearance of genetically modified foods in the marketplace has resulted in a firestorm of public debate, scientific discussion, and media coverage.
