Topic: Fuel efficiency

Fuel efficiency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fuel efficiency is normally expressed in terms of power per unit of engine displacement, also known as specific output.
Fuel efficiency relates the efficiency of converting energy contained in a carrier fuel to kinetic energy or work.
For example, power output from Chrysler's 3.9 L LA V6 engine jumped from 125 hp (93 kW) to 180 hp (134 kW) in 1992 due to the addition of fuel injection and a free-flowing intake manifold.

Fuel that is not needed flows back via a water heat exchanger and is mixed with the incoming fuel from the tank of the CLS 350 CGI.
Fuel cell technology is projected to supply a tiny 0.02% of LDV transportation energy consumed in 2030.
A regulating valve ensures that only the fuel quantity required for the engine’s operating point is delivered, thereby reducing the power requirement of the high-pressure pump.

One way is through improvements in conventional technology that enhances the efficiency of today’s vehicle powertrains, such as variable valve timing.
For example, because of torque demands for trucks (towing, load carrying, etc), technologies such as turbochargers, variable valve timing, and continuously variable transmissions do not yield the fuel economy gains possible in cars—and may not be applicable at all.
Downsizing with Turbocharger or Supercharger: Utilizes a turbine in the exhaust stream to drive a compressor in the intake manifold, which compresses incoming air to the engine.

 IATA - Fuel efficiency
The bulk of fuel efficiency improvements derive from the gradual incorporation of best available technologies in the fleet.
Typically, it takes 15 to 20 years before new technologies translate into system-wide efficiency gains.
Safety, legal and environmental constraints can also limit the potential to operate more efficiently.

The MOUs embrace a more comprehensive, balanced approach to motor vehicle fuel efficiency aimed at vehicle owners and operators, as well as vehicle technology.
An update and enhancement of NRCan's Vehicle Information System (VIS) was undertaken in preparation of the release of an analysis of new vehicle fuel efficiency and technology trends from 1988 to 1998.
The elements of the MOUs are being implemented through the Government Industry Motor Vehicle Energy Committee (GIMVEC) and its sub-committees, which are working in three areas: communicating and promoting vehicle efficiency, vehicle energy data and reporting and future vehicle technology.

A temporary one-year freeze was included in DOT's Fiscal Year 1996 appropriation; the legislation would extend the freeze at the current levels of 27.5 miles per gallon (mpg) for passenger cars and 20.7 mpg for light trucks, until changed by law.
A few of the real reasons construction contractors chose specific vehicles are (in no particular order): safety, expected life-span of vehicle, durability and reliability, ease and handling, engine size and/or power, towing, plowing and hauling capability, ground clearance and off-road capability, stocking options, and size and configuration of cargo space.
PHCC-National Association believes that unreasonably high CAFE standards have already raised automobile and light truck costs, limited consumer choice of vehicles and reduced highway safety without achieving the anticipated environmental and energy efficiency benefits expected.

So in terms of fuel used per mile, the faster the car goes, the better use we make of that fixed amount of fuel required.
When you put the car in drive and start moving at say 1 mph, the car uses only a tiny bit more fuel, because the road load is very small at 1 mph.
Eventually, the power required increases more than the efficiency of the engine improves.
