Boston.com / Cars / Honda tops in fuel economy
The new Ford Escape hybrid is the most fuel efficient SUV, with 31 mpg on the highway, and the Ford Ranger is the most fuel efficient pickup with 29 mpg on the highway.
The automatic version of the Dodge Ram pickup, which gets 12 mpg on the highway, was the least fuel efficient in this year's survey.
Insight tops the list of 2005 vehicles with 61 miles per gallon in the city and 66 mpg on the highway, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy said yesterday.

MPT Fuel Disc: Finally a Fuel Economy Product That Actually Works
Their flagship product, the MPT fuel disc, harnesses the power of specific frequencies by programming them into a holographic disc that is affixed to the bottom of your fuel tank.
With a cleaner more complete burn in the pistons, higher fuel efficiency, more power and lower emissions are realized.
These programmed frequencies are projected approximately 8 inches into the fuel tank

 Clean Car Campaign
Because a hybrid drivetrain has a battery (or other energy storage device) along with power electronics that manage motor and generator components connected to the wheels, it can also recapture braking energy that would otherwise be lost.
Hybrid powertrains combine the range and power of an internal combustion engine with the high efficiency of electric drive.
The Insight achieved fuel economy of over 70 mpg on the highway, and reaches ULEV emission standards.

Effectiveness and Impact of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards -- Executive Summary
Fuel economy targets under the Enhanced-CAFE system: cars with gasoline engines,
One such system would make the fuel economy target dependent on vehicle weight, with lower fuel consumption targets set for lighter vehicles and higher targets for heavier vehicles, up to some maximum weight, above which the target would be weight-independent.
One other assumption is required to ascertain cost-efficient technology packages—the horizon over which fuel economy gains ought to be counted.

 1996 BMW 318ti Fuel Economy
This test has an average speed of about 48.2 MPH and again includes some stops etc. The economy numbers I've obtained for my car imply my city mileage is about 4% lower than the EPA estimate while my highway mileage is about 3% higher.
The highway numbers are based on their higway driving cycle (HFET).
From the plot it's easy to see that the best possible fuel economy for my car, 41 MPG, is obtained at about 40 MPH.

iccn :: Religious Leaders Statement on Fuel Economy
The petroleum-fueled automobiles now being built and marketed will bring disastrous pollution to peoples of developing nations and reduce access to affordable, cleaner transportation as automobiles for elites replace trains and transit for all.
We write now to ask you in the automobile industry a more explicit question: what specific pledges --- in volume, timing, and commitments to marketing --- will you make to produce automobiles, SUVs, and pick-up trucks with substantially greater fuel economy?
Increased fuel economy standards, after the 1970s oil embargo, led to a dramatic reduction in imported oil by nearly 50%.

 Corporate Average Fuel Economy
The standards for all light trucks manufactured is set at 21.0 mpg for MY 2005, 21.6 mpg for MY 2006, and 22.2 mpg for MY 2007.
The CAFE standards are applied on a fleet-wide basis for each manufacturer; i.e., the fuel economy ratings for a manufacturer's entire line of passenger cars must average at least 27.5 mpg for the manufacturer to comply with the standard.
In April of 2003, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration promulgated a final rule establishing the average fuel economy standards for light trucks that will be manufactured in the 2005-2007 model years (MYs).
